What is UMNSVP?

The University of Minnesota Solar Vehicle Project, or UMNSVP, is a team of undergraduate students from the University of Minnesota that designs and constructs solar-powered cars.

UMNSVP takes great pride in being one of the very few collegiate solar car teams that researches, assembles, encapsulates, and attaches its own solar array. In fact, almost everything on the car is designed, built, and programmed by team members.

What is the University of Minnesota solar vehicle project?

The University of Minnesota Solar Vehicle Project (UMNSVP) was founded by a group of ambitious undergraduate students in 1990. By 1993, our first solar car, Aurora I, was built. The team has built 13 vehicles in total. We are one of the most decorated teams in America, having raced in over 30 different solar challenges on 3 different continents.

When did UMNSVP cross the North American Solar Challenge border?

On July 21, 2005, during the North American Solar Challenge, Borealis III passed from the United States to Canada to become the first solar car to cross an international boundary during a race. After the team’s first race, UMNSVP has placed in the top 5 at the American Solar Challenge 10 times, no team has done that more times.
