Where is Verchères?

Verchères is 62 km northeast of Montréal, situated on the south shore of the St Lawrence River between LONGUEUIL and SOREL. In 1665, François Jarret, Sieur de Verchères (1641-1700), obtained a commission with the CARIGNAN-SALIÈRES REGIMENT and was sent to New France. In 1672 he was granted the seigneury of Verchères for his military service.

In the 17th century, the settlement at Verchères was the scene of an Iroquois raid that was apparently thwarted by the ingenuity of a 14-year-old girl named Madeleine (now known as Madeleine de Verchères ).

How many children did Madeleine de Verchères have?

The couple had five children, two of whom survived to adulthood: Madeleine Marie (1707–76) and Charles François (1710–76). Madeleine de Verchères later became involved in a series of legal cases related to her reputation, family land holdings and noble status. She travelled to France at least twice to resolve legal disputes.
