A LOTO program addresses the steps necessary to disable machinery or equipment that could release hazardous energy or start unexpectedly during servicing or maintenance activities. As an employer, you need to have a LOTO program in place and provide training to your employees.

How do you do a LOTO?

The eight basic steps to a LOTO procedure are as follows:

  1. Prepare for the shutdown.
  2. Notify affected employees.
  3. Shut down the equipment.
  4. Isolate energy sources.
  5. Apply LOTO devices to energy sources.
  6. Release/control all stored energy.
  7. Verify the lockout.
  8. Maintain the lockout.

Who can teach LOTO?

1. Authorized employees. As a general rule, this group might include your electricians, maintenance personnel, and some machine operators. These workers are the only ones allowed by OSHA to perform LOTO.
