What does a breast prosthesis look like?
Most breast prostheses are made from soft silicone gel encased in a thin film. They’re moulded to resemble the natural shape of a woman’s breast, or part of a breast. The outer surface feels soft and smooth, and may include a nipple outline.

What is a post-mastectomy bra? Post-mastectomy (or simply mastectomy) bras resemble regular bras but with one important difference – they have spandex stretch pockets on the inside which help hold and keep the breast prosthesis in place. Mastectomy bras can be purchased at specialty shops or mastectomy boutiques.
What is a mastectomy pillow?
Mastectomy pillows are used to relieve pressure, help position body parts, and provide comfort after breast surgery. These pillows can be placed under the breast, in the armpit, or used to prop up your arm or neck.

Simply put, mastectomy swimsuits are bathing suits specifically designed for women who have had breast surgery. They sometimes include sewn-in breast pockets for prostheses as well as altered features like higher necklines and armholes to help women feel more confident and offer more support where she needs it.
Do prosthetic breasts have nipples?
Prosthetic (or ‘artificial’) nipples are made of soft silicone that can be worn on a reconstructed breast or prosthesis. They are either self-sticking or come with special skin glue that can hold the prosthetic nipple in place for several days.
How do you clean a breast prosthesis?
Handwash the prosthesis after every wear. Use warm water and a mild unscented soap or a cleanser supplied by the prosthesis manufacturer. Rinse the prosthesis thoroughly and pat it dry with a towel. Rinse the prosthesis in clean water soon after swimming to remove chlorine or saltwater.
