Finished or glossy maple fretboard

  1. Use a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth to wipe grime and moisture from in between and around the strings.
  2. Loosen or remove the strings for a deeper clean or to apply a light guitar polish. Allow the polish to sit for a few minutes before wiping dry with another microfiber cloth.

Do I need to oil my guitar neck?

If your fingerboard is free of gunk, all you need to do is oil it. Buy a bottle of mineral oil at the grocery store. With all the strings off the tuners and stuffed into the sound hole, apply some oil on a folded paper towel and wipe it on the face of the fingerboard. It’s fine to wipe it on the frets.

Can you use water on a maple fretboard?

Unlike Rosewood and Ebony maple fretboards do require sealing. If your neck is maple along with your fretboard you can finish your neck and fretboard at the same time. If using lacquer, you will need to apply your finish and then cut away the build up on top of the frets, so the fret wires are exposed.

Does a roasted maple neck need finish?

Roasted maple is more stable than unroasted maple, but I’d still finish it to keep it from looking disgusting as it picks up dirt and oils from your skin over the years. Tru Oil is fine for necks in my opinion, if you’re looking for a satin/semi-gloss look.

Do maple necks darken with age?

A: Generally, the maple necks (along with the fingerboards and headstocks) on most modern Fender guitars won’t get darker with age. Vintage Strats and Teles often have maple necks that have turned almost a dark amber color.
