Most complaints of the older models are the lack of tone control, poor nut, poor tuners, bad bridge/saddles. Pickups and neck get great reviews. They are not too heavy and are comfortable to play. The finish on every one that I’ve had is good quality. The 51s have become platforms for modders because of the low price.
