Unarmed combat or “Combatives” as it’s sometimes called, is very different from most martial arts, in that the sole purpose of most of the physical techniques is to kill an enemy soldier. This system doesn’t concern itself with coloured belts, white uniforms, bowing or learning to count to ten in Japanese!
What was unarmed combat training like in the 1970s?
In the 1970s we did unarmed combat training within our own regiment using local resources. We used veterans (WWI, Malaya, Vietnam) to instruct us. We even paid for the training out of our own pockets. One student, Bill Wolf, went on the make a profession of instructing martial-arts etc. as well as being a soldier and a police officer.
