How are V-belt sheaves measured?
From a practical standpoint, to determine approximate belt length, it is much easier to physically determine the diameter of a sheave by measuring the outside diameter, and the length of the belt by measuring the outside circumference.

Belt length is based on two factors: the center-to-center distance between pulleys and the arc of contact between the belt and the pulleys, which depends on the relative pulley diameters. When the belt’s only purpose is to transmit power, pulleys of equal diameter are used on each end of the belt.
How do I choose the right V belt?
Use a cloth measuring tape (not a steel one) and wrap it around the outside of the belt. You also use a thin string to take this measurement and place it on a steel tape to get the correct length. Next, for “A” Belts (1/2” width) subtract two-inches from the outside measurement to select the correct V-belt.

V-belt cross sections can be identified by their top width and depth dimensions. For example, a v-belt with a top width of 21/32” and a depth of 7/16” is a “B” belt.
