Who was the original twerk?

Meet Shawn Hatfield, also known as Twerk. Back in 1989, he was a skinny, 16-year-old skateboarder living in Santa Cruz, California. Like many other white kids in the late ’80s, he and his group of friends were just getting into hip-hop music.

Twerking first received national recognition in the United States in the early 2000s, when the song “Whistle While You Twurk” (2000), by Southern hip hop duo Ying Yang Twins, peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs component chart.
Is the twerk team related?
They called themselves the #TwerkTeam and took twerking to all four corners of the Earth! Former member “Betty Butt” passed away back in 2014, so now the group consists of #MizzTwerksum (Peaches) and #LadyLuscious (Elle) who happen to be sisters.

According to her Myspace page, the Twerk Team was established in 2005, making these ladies 14-years-old when they first started.
Why is twerking called?
The word “twerk” – a dance move popularised by singer Miley Cyrus – actually dates back to 1820, according to the Oxford English Dictionary. Researchers found the word, one of 500 new dictionary entries, was first used in 1820, spelt twirk, to refer to a twisting or jerking movement or twitch.
