Questacon was founded by ANU Professor Mike Gore AM, whose great love of teaching both students and the general public inspired him to develop Australia’s first interactive science centre, based on the Exploratorium in San Francisco. From its inception Questacon has had a strong national focus.

What age is Questacon suitable for?

How long you visit Questacon for largely depends on the ages of your kids and how long you’re spending in Canberra. We think it’s best for kids of about 4 and up. We spent 3.5 hours there recently but could have stayed longer – that was with a 4.5 and 6.5 year old.

Most families visiting Canberra head straight for Questacon, Australia’s premier science museum, where they can play around with fun interactive exhibits and tinker in supervised workshops. Permanent features include earthquake simulators, a ginormous model of the moon, and a terrifying vertical slide.

Can adults go to Questacon?

It’s pitched at kids but as 50 something adults we found plenty to enjoy. Don’t worry that there are only children in line for ‘the leap of faith’: adult size overalls are available. It’s best to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy this wonderful attraction.

The Questacon team have developed a huge collection of activity sheets for children from Kindergarten all the way through to Year 12. These activity sheets are easily downloadable so they can be printed and done offline and were designed to be interesting, engaging and full of hands on learning experiences where parents and kids can work together.

Why is it called Questacon?

The name ‘Questacon’ combines two words—‘quest’ meaning ‘to discover’ and ‘con’ meaning ‘to study’. Despite a modest beginning, by the mid-1980s Questacon had achieved national and international recognition. Today Questacon is Australia’s largest science centre and is among the world’s leading science centres.

Why is Questacon important to Aboriginal people?

Questacon acknowledges Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional custodians and first scientists, makers and innovators of this land and their continuing connection to Country. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are advised that the Questacon website may contain images of people who have passed away.

What can kids do at Questacon?

Kids often ask the question “Why?” and the Questacon staff have all the answers. Walk around to each station and crank handles, press buttons, pull levers, put balls into a gravity well, walk in a sloping room, throw balls up ramps, watch lightening get made, see how a miniature tornado is formed, feel an earthquake and much more.
