Can you make whiskey with a reflux still?
Most people find pot stills as versatile since it could be utilized to flavor schnapps, whiskey and rum. It also decreases a finished wash’s volume and removes yeast cells. A reflux still is effective in creating a flavorless and odorless product.
Do you make cuts with a reflux still?
A more complex still with a chamber called the ‘reflux’ condenser, where steam is filtered and some of the unwanted elements are returned to the boiling vessel. This type of still strips all flavours out to produce a pure plain spirit. You don’t need to make ‘cuts’ on this type of still (only discarding the foreshots).
Can you make gin in a reflux still?
Depending on what a distiller is trying to create in his gin, he or she can use a pot still, a reflux still, or a combination of both. And there are modifications distillers can make to further hone in on their desired flavor profile.
What temperature should you run a reflux still?
If, for example, 90°C / 194°F is the optimal head temperature for your reflux still column to collect alcohol, if the temperature increases during the distillation, the distiller can increase the reflux ratio and thereby increase the amount of ABV being sent over to the product condenser.
What type of still is best for gin?
copper
Apart from the undeniable aesthetic appeal, copper plays an important, even essential, role in the gin-making process. While stills can equally be made from stainless steel, aluminium, and a range of other materials, we find that copper is the very best option.
What kind of still is used for gin?
Both pot stills and column stills have their uses but if you are wanting to make clear spirits such as vodka, white rum or London dry gin, the column still is the best to use.
What is a lm still?
Liquid Management Reflux Still Design (LM) The distilled product falls onto the plates (A) at which point it either exits the reflux still via the needle valve (D) or drips back down over the packing in the column. Hence why it is called a liquid management reflux still.
Can a reflux still be used for high proof alcohol?
In this instructable I will show you how to build a reflux still which can be used for producing high proof alcohol. This still is a basic reflux still, and is a nice intro into reflux stills, as more complex reflux stills are hard to build and will cost a lot.
How to build a reflux column?
To build the Reflux column we need to assemble a few things first. 1 ½” tee, a 3″ long piece of 2″ copper pipe, a thermometer and a 2″ cap. See illustration below for further details.
How to build a reflux pipe still?
In this step we will cut the pipes connecting the column and condenser, along with the reflux pipes. Start by cutting a 70mm section of 15mm piping. This will connect the condenser and column of the still. Next, cut two 150mm sections of 15mm pipe. These will act as reflux points, and provide water to the condenser. Cut a 70mm section of 28mm pipe.
How do you collect distillate from a reflux still?
File the edges so they are smooth and all the burrs are removed. Next let’s cut the slots in the column for the upper and lower copper collecting plates we just made. These plates will collect distillate from the condenser and allow it to exit the reflux still via the needle valve.
